Freesia's Cross Country Journey

In the beginning of this year puppy raisers Steve and Monica contacted our trainers to ask about taking Freesia on an upcoming trip to California. Their initial plans were to fly across country, but that did not work out and so they decided to drive.

Decisions to allow puppies to travel are not taken lightly. We must be very sure that the puppy is ready for this level of stress and stimulation.

If the puppy is ready, then it can be a great opportunity for socialization and unique experiences.

Freesia at the time, was almost six months old. Her training was going well, and she was working her way through fear phases with ease. We felt she was an excellent candidate for the trip. We have a great deal of confidence and trust in Steve and Monica, and we know they have excellent judgement. We approved the trip and plans began the long journey.

The Puppy Raisers Journey

One of our biggest assets is our dogs.  Our volunteers are also a very important asset as well. We often talk about our volunteers, but there is never enough praise that can be sent in their direction.

Today let’s take a glimpse at a year and a half in the life of a puppy raiser.

Puppy raisers open their homes to puppies for up to one and a half years. A day in the life of a puppy raiser includes so many different adventures.  Enjoy the journey through the months.

-Puppy arrives and house training begins
-Late night trips out to go potty
-Clean up, clean up, clean up
-Strolls around the yard
-Formal practice sessions and classes
-Field trips
-Vet visits (lots of vet visits!)
-“My house smells like dog poop”
-Play time
-Play dates with other puppies
-Daily practice of tasks and skills
-Lots and lots of meals
-Socializing trips
-Chewed socks, chairs, rugs, toys, and (UGH) remote controls
-More field trips, vet visits, strolls around the yard, and practice sessions
-Dog hair everywhere
-Visits to the groomer
-“Why do I still have to lift my puppy into the car?”
